About Us
South East Reptile Relocations is a locally based reptile relocation service, owned and operated by licensed snake catcher Mitch Thorburn. We’re a local family business with many years of experience working with snakes and other reptiles throughout the Gold Coast and surrounding areas, including Hope Island.
Mitch has a genuine passion for reptiles and wildlife and takes pride in helping people understand the animals they encounter around their homes and properties. Whenever possible, we’ll explain what species we have found, why it may have ended up there and what you can do to reduce the chances of another visit.
All work undertaken on behalf of South East Reptile Relocations has been approved by the Queensland Government and is carried out by appropriately licensed, trained and insured professionals.
Our aim is to safely remove unwanted reptiles while ensuring they are relocated to suitable habitat. We also provide reptile awareness advice, roof and property inspections, and our free snake and lizard identification service.
Snakes and Reptiles in Hope Island
Although much of Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove is developed, the area still provides suitable habitat for a variety of native reptiles. Gardens, golf courses, waterways and surrounding natural areas can provide plenty of food, shelter and suitable habitat for snakes and other reptiles. The waterways and green spaces throughout the area can also provide natural corridors for reptiles moving between different areas.
Several snake species can be encountered around Hope Island, including Eastern Brown Snakes, Red-bellied Black Snakes, Common Tree Snakes and Coastal Carpet Pythons. Snakes aren’t limited to natural areas and can move through residential neighbourhoods as they search for food and shelter. Properties with lush gardens, ponds, bushland or areas of natural vegetation may be more likely to encounter reptiles, but snakes can also turn up in more built-up parts of the community.
